All systems are go in Rang 6 this month. There was lots of discussion and decision making in preparation for presenting our World War 2 projects to Rang 3-Rang 5. We applied our critical literacy skills throughout the process. Preparation was crucial and we rehearsed our presentations numerous times. Míle buíochas lenár gcairde sna ranganna difriúla a thug spreagadh dúinn! It's all hip shaking and fast feet this month with our Zumba instructor Pat. We have really enjoyed sharing this experience with ár gcairde i Rang Múinteoir Chláir. Dancing With The Stars watch out!
On the 8th of December, both 6th classes travelled to Ballina Church to learn about and rejoice the feast of the Immaculate Conception. We learned some songs for our show Alice in Wonderland. We will be performing this show in February.
We learned about WW2 (1939-1945), the Blitz, Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain. We are working on projects at the moment. Paul Conroy (Kyle' s grandad), brought in items from his war collection such as uniforms of soldiers from U.S, Germany, and Britain. He also examined ration books, models of submarines, medals and photographs. He had a Japanese blessing printed on a silk scarf attached to a scroll. He also had a 'sweetheart cushion', which was gifted to a loved one by the soldier. His visit really opened our eyes to the technology used and the similarities and differences on both sides of WW2. We painted Christmas Windows and made Brian Boru shields to battle the' Vikings' in 3rd class. We also had a competition on who could make the best recycled Christmas decoration for the Christmas tree. Next, we learned about the diagram and functions of the kidney. Then we gathered supplies for less well off people in our community for a Christmas appeal, and made Christmas cards for senior citizens in the nursing home. We learned how to design Christmas cards on Netbooks with Múinteoir Patricia. We look forward to printing them and sharing them with our friends and family. Nollaig Shona daoibh go léir! We have been very busy this month creating Brian Boru shields, cross stitch pictures, clay tea light holders, painting our windows, creating digital Christmas cards and cards for the local nursing homes.
6th class thoroughly enjoyed their last dancing classes with Marie Hogan and we thank Marie for teaching us so well since Junior Infants.
We were privileged to have a visit from Paul Conroy (grandad of Kyle), to visit us with his some of his superb collection of WW2 memorabilia. We are currently completing projects on the topic. We have read a novel, Goodnight Mister Tom, in recent weeks. Paul's information has added greatly to our knowledge. We understand the importance of keeping the stories behind these artefacts and primary sources alive. Taimíd fíor-bhuíoch as! Go raibh míle Paul!
November was a busy month of Active Everyday Challenges, learning how to play volleyball and a trek to the Killaloe library. Click on the photos for more details.
Rang 6 participated in 'Meet the Scientist' Webinar Series this month. We had seminars with surgeon, Dr. Aoife Lowry and blood doctor, Dr. Marina Zaki. It was very interesting. We all enjoyed learning about the way hospitals work. We learned about the Circulatory System and we even dissected sheep's hearts. I would like to investigate how the brain works as well as other parts of the body, having listened to the webinars. (Amy Minihan)
Happy Halloween! Well done to everyone for their superb efforts in dressing up today. We are so proud of their school spirit to get involved and lead the way for our school community!
The election for the Student's Council was an experience I never had before. It was like an actual election for politicians. It was great fun preparing a speech, casting our votes on the ballot paper in the polling booth and awaiting the results of the final count. I am looking forward to representing Rang 6 on Student's Council. (Fergal)
